Leah Gervais: Welcome visionaries, to this week’s podcast episode. This is going to be all about side hustling. So those of you who have followed me for a while, probably know what a soft spot I have in my heart for side hustling and side hustlers. And that’s because that is a huge part of my own story. I started my business four years ago, definitely as a side hustle, I was working at a, as a paralegal at a law firm in New York City and I was so stuck in my life. I felt so disappointed with how things had turned out after I quote did everything right. I had worked really hard to go to NYU. I had worked really hard in school. I had worked really hard to get this job at a prestigious law firm. Yet. I felt like I was living paycheck to paycheck. I felt like I never had the opportunity to even really start saving.
And the life that I thought I was working really hard for in college, just wasn’t happening. It just was slipping between my fingers. I had no end in sight to when I would not need roommates anymore, or when I would be able to just have more money to do kind of what I envisioned or be able to do in my twenties and thirties. And frankly, my job just wasn’t lighting me up and there’s nothing wrong with the job itself. I actually loved the firm I worked for, the people were great, but the legal work wasn’t really for me. And I was really hoping and had envisioned myself in a career where I just had more impact directly with my clients. And I think if you’re a lawyer that might happen, but for me as a paralegal, I wasn’t really seeing that. So I just felt really empty honestly.
And I started my now six figure business as a side hustle, um, to kind of try to fill in some of those gaps. Um, I was realizing I didn’t want to go to law school. Uh, I was realizing this wasn’t the path for me, but I didn’t know what else there was for me. I didn’t know what the rest of the path was. So I didn’t know if I should be changing careers or applying to different jobs. I didn’t know how it would be able to start making money. Everything was really unclear. And honestly, it was a very scary time for me. It’s easy for me to look back now and be like, Oh my God, Liam, what were you scared of? You were young. You should go for things. Things were gonna turn out great. They don’t know that in the moment, which is a great lesson for me.
Nonetheless, I started this side hustle, my blog. It was then a blog to try to write about what I was kind of going through and feeling. And I was imagining that there were other people in my shoes, in their twenties and thirties that were feeling lost in similar ways. And long story short that blog took off, turned, turned into a life of its own. I was able to leave my nine to five job, and now it’s my full time business. But I side hustled for about two years before I started it on my own. And I don’t actually think you need to do it for as long as I did. I have helped my clients leave their jobs in under a year, within a few months I just had a client who started her side hustle in March. It is August at the time of this recording.
So less than six months ago, and she already left her nine to five job and she’s already at a six figure salary. So you don’t need to take as long as I did, but there was also a lot that I didn’t know, because I didn’t know what I was doing, which is why I now work with side hustlers and why I created my signature program, scaler side house hustle, which has seen dozens of people. I think over, I think we just hit over a hundred people, um, go through and start successful side hustles. And it’s really that fast track that people need so that it doesn’t have to take you two years. And when I was at my nine to five job, I went from completely struggling as a side hustler and honestly struggling as a side hustler, not to sound overdramatic, it can get you to a really dark place.
It did for me anyway, because I felt like I was sacrificing all of my extra time around my day job. Time that I could have been spent could have spent hanging out with my friends or my good boyfriend. The man I am now married to or exploring New York, or just for myself, getting to know myself better. I was always working on my side hustle and I didn’t mind because I loved it, but it started to wear down on me because I wasn’t getting anything, any results from it. I wasn’t getting any money from it. I wasn’t getting any benefit from it. Nothing was giving me my return on my investment and that really can start to do some dark things to your mind. You can think some things are wrong with you. You can think, well, why is it working out for other people? And not me.
I definitely thought that I thought maybe I didn’t have what it takes. I thought maybe I didn’t have a good idea. All these things that are absolutely not true. I just simply didn’t know how to run a business. So I wasn’t doing the things you need in order for it to be successful. And I took it personally and it really sucks once I started realizing that I wasn’t meant to do this on my own and that the fastest way I could make this happen would be to learn from other people. I started investing in my own business. I started investing in things. I didn’t know how to do. I started looking at it as a business rather than a hobby, or rather than a maybe what if someday and things took off really quickly for me from there, after that, it was a matter of months before I was making more from my side hustle than I was at my nine to five job, which blew my mind because in, in, under a year, basically I went from living paycheck to paycheck, struggling.
Literally the biggest treat I could do for myself was to buy, um, Yogi tea on payday. Like on Fridays, I’m not kidding at all. I would like get paid on Fridays and on my way to work, I’d go walk it to Walgreens and buy that Yogi tea, which was like literally $10. And that was like the only thing that was out of my budget. Um, and it’s not, I’m not trying to like look for sympathy here. I had a good life. I lived in New York city. Obviously it was, I was, I had a lot of privilege, but just the way my budget was with my huge student loans, the cost of living in New York city, even though I had two roommates and we lived in only a two bedrooms, so three of us in a two bedroom apartment, uh, that was just, that was my reality.
And then in a matter of months, I, my, my income doubled, right, because all of a sudden I was making more from my side hustle than it was my nine to five, really opened up to me so much possibility. And that is why I created my program, scalar side hustle. If you are wanting to learn how to side hustle and how I did that, I highly recommend getting on the wait list. Um, you can go to, um, well, you can just stay on me and I’ll put you on there just because I don’t know the URL off the top of my head, but I’ll put you on there and you can save money if you do get on the wait list. So anyway, my point is side hustling is really, uh, an important part of my chapter or an important chapter in the journey. It’s a big spot in my heart and it is how I’ve seen so many of my other clients, um, really be able to have their businesses take off as well.
So because of my story and because of what I’ve done with my clients, I now really can tell pretty quickly when a side hustle is going to take off or when it’s not going to. So I wanted to come talk to you guys today about six traits that make the most successful side hustles. So successful three of these are gonna be about the side hustle themselves. And three of these are going to be about the side hustler, who really is the founder of a company, especially in the beginning and in the beginning of kind of all the things in the company. You’re the marketer, you’re the CFO, you’re doing the finances, you’re doing the writing, you’re doing the content creation here. You’re doing everything. Um, and so really what about people who do that well? What, what kind of traits do they have? So that further ado let’s dive in. I’d love to hear from you guys that are here. Live, give me an emoji on how you feel about side hustling or business, or just how you’re feeling about life today.
Let’s dive in. And just a reminder, if you want to get on the waitlist for Scale Your Side Hustle, and you want to save hundreds of dollars on the program, then you should DM me right away. So I can put you on because the waitlist expires next week. And this honestly, I’ve had people in there that are already full time, and they’ve still, they’ve used this program to go on, to hit I figure months. So you don’t have to be brand new to it. You can still just want to ramp up your business if that is exciting to you. All right. So let’s talk about the side hustle itself. And three of the traits that I think the most successful side hustles have trait. Number one is that these side hustles are digital for at least most of it, if not all of it, ideally all of it.
And it probably sounds somewhat superfluous to say this during, you know, COVID and during a pandemic, because things literally have to be virtual right now. But even before this, I can tell you that my most successful clients and the reason my business was able to take off quickly was because a large part of it was virtual. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a successful brick and mortar business, but you really do have to be honest with yourself about the cost of that both time and money and other resources that come with that. So being virtual, you are able to reach literally millions, if not billions, more people through your offerings than if you do something just in person or just brick and mortar and taking that a step further, I don’t just mean your offerings being virtual, or I guess I should say, I don’t just mean your business being virtual, but also your offerings.
So even if you have an online, let’s say t-shirt shop or an online, you know, health, food store or something like that, but you’re still relying all of your income to be on brick and mortar products or just some physical products. It’s going to take a lot longer to scale it. Whereas if you are focusing on things that are digital, your overhead cost is so much lower because you’re not having to pay for production. You’re not having to pay for storage. You’re not having to pay for shipping. All the other things that come with having to sell things that are physical products. Now, this is why I think you have such a power move in you. If you are a side hustler that is doing pretty much your whole business virtually, because then you can use the money that you’re not using on paying for rent, on paying for physical products, on paying for production, paying for shipping, et cetera, to pay for coaching.
And the truth is entrepreneurship is 85% at least about your mindset and about how you think and about how you address challenges. So if you have coaching early on where people can help you train your brain to think like an entrepreneur and they can help call you out with where you’re selling yourself short, you will move so much faster. So I really encourage you to shift your perspective on if you have anything that’s brick and mortar. I mean, I guess I’m going to say at the end of the day, it’s up to you what you want to do. But I will say my most successful clients know that they are their own best investments. They know that even if they have the desire to sell things that are physical later on down the line, they can do that hell of a lot easier once they have an audience that’s built.
Once they have things that sales that they’ve already got under their belt, so they can absolute so they can, uh, you know, connect with their customers and clients and see what they even want. And once they have shaped themselves into someone who can sell things effortlessly, it’s going to make a lot more sense. So you don’t have to rule it out, but I do want you to think if you want to be one of the most successful and soon, this is something that I would really consider is where are you spending your money? Where are you not spending your money? And how is that stunting your own growth as well as the growth of your business. And this was all my advice before COVID even hit. Now. I think it’s really a no brainer to have things be as virtual as possible. Um, I’m working with a few clients in some of my programs right now that are adding virtual components to their brick and mortar businesses. So you don’t need to start over, but it’s something that should definitely be considered an added you’ll have a much easier time growing.
Okay. Successful trait number two that I see often in my most successful entrepreneurs and my most successful side hustlers is that they pay attention early on to visibility. So really at the end of the day, online business only has two- we can kind of boil it down, I’m talking to my scaler side hustle group about this right now, actually two main things you have to pay attention to, to make money, are people seeing you? And when they do, are they buying from you? You know, and you can kind of even just think of it as a game. At some point, you can think how many people are seeing me and how many people are buying me. And if I ramped this up, then am I going to make more money?
Or if I ramp this up, am I going to make more money? And it’s kind of just like this equation, you can constantly tweak. And in fact, you’ll see seven figure course creators, people that have really big, successful, profitable online businesses. This is kind of their day to day work at this point as they’re just tweaking this equation, um, until it has, it gets higher and higher and higher. So step one of this equation is visibility. Now this is one of the reasons why mindset work is so important because this is something that’s very scary for people in the beginning. They are nervous about what other people will think about them. They’re nervous about being judged. They’re nervous about the, you know, failure of being laughed out of gossip, all of these things. And I have been there. I literally wanted my business to be anonymous.
When I started, because I was so afraid of what people would think of me, which if you go look at my Instagram now is like the biggest joke ever, because I couldn’t be more opposite. Now. Now it’s like “hello”, so, you know, okay, it’s totally normal to feel that nervousness in the beginning. And that’s why mindset work and having a coach and being in programs is so helpful because they can help you both strategically and from a mindset perspective, worked through that. But visibility is a nonnegotiable. And specifically my most successful side hustlers have email lists. They are not playing the whole hamster wheel. Where’s my next client coming from. I never really know I’m going to just try social media. I’m going to be sporadic. I’m hoping people just DM me out of the blue game. It doesn’t work. If it works, it’s not sustainable.
You have to have a database and you have to have people that can give you feedback on what you’re creating, what you want to create, how you want to create it, et cetera. I just saw a news clip with one of the Kardashians. I don’t remember which one it is, but I’m sure it is either Kylie or Kim, because I think that they have makeup lines and they were saying how they social media, Instagram, specifically one, they have never, never paid for marketing. They literally don’t have to pay for marketing at all because they have made these platforms so huge. And they’ve made the engagement with their audience so important that once they just show something on there that is, they have an audience to buy from them. And the other thing that was valuable about what they said was that, uh, they also, you know, don’t pick like they have their audience decide the packaging for their new products and services.
So if they’re making something new, they literally do polls and the audience just decides. So think about it that way, visibility and specifically your email list. I know the Kardashians might not have an email list, but I actually bet their makeup brands do. And even so they’re a little bit of an anomaly. For the most part you do want an email list and think about that power. Think about, instead of sitting behind the scenes, you know, behind your computer, wondering who wants, what, how much should I charge for it? Would they like this? What color should it be? When should I deliver it, et cetera, people are telling you, you literally can do polls. You literally can send out surveys. You can do, you can get on phone calls with people. There are so many options when you’re visible to create things. And if you’re not visible, it doesn’t matter if you have the best product or service in the world, people are not going to know about it until you tell them about it, it’s your responsibility to make sure they know about it.
So that is the second key factor of my most successful side hustlers is that they are dedicated to being seen and they are not only dedicated to, um, you know, showing up on social media and growing their email list and spending money on their email list. If they need to be there dedicated to doing mindset, work, to move through any insecurity that could stop them from being visible.
The third trait of my most successful side hustlers is that they actually were still on the side hustle. So the first trait of the side hustle was that it was digital or virtual. The second trait is that it is visible. And the third trait is that it is actually selling things in alignment with their goals. So this might sound a little bit obvious, but I cannot tell you how many times I talked to people who are wondering why their side hustle isn’t taken off.
And when I ask them what they’re selling, how much they’re selling it for, how frequently none of their answers would match up to the goals they’re telling me. So for example, if someone’s goal is to make $500 a month from their side hustle, I’m sorry, $5,000 a month for their side hustle. And I ask them, okay, well, what are you selling to get there? Uh, the, you know, there’s a whole range of things that could be keeping them from that on the like kind of softest end or the closest end. I guess you could say is, I often see people say, well, I’m selling, um, uh, hour-long consulting packages or I’m selling, um, hour long training sessions or one off type of sessions, um, things that are usually a few hundred dollars. And so you really have to do the math. It’s just numbers and think, okay, if I, how many of these do I actually need to sell to get to $5,000?
Well often it’s going to be something like 50, you know, a lot, a lot, a lot, a lot. And you can think of your email list as only this is kind of a rough average, but usually about only 1% actually buy what you sell- that will change depending on your marketing and how much you grow. And we don’t have to get too deeply into that. But just for example sake to 1% of your email list buys from you. You have a 100, or I’m sorry, you have a 1,000 person email list. Then you are getting 10 people to buy from you. So you can imagine that if you need 50 consulting sales, then you need to be, you need to have, what would it be then I guess, 5,000 people on your email list in order to get that. And that’s just for one month, those people aren’t going to buy every single month.
So you have to be visible. You have to have people seeing you, you have to have people knowing who you are, and then you have to be selling things that will actually generate your income to where you want it to be. So that was kind of the least extreme of the spectrum where people say, yeah, I want to make $5,000. I want to make $10,000. And they’re only selling things for a few hundred dollars, which take a lot of marketing. Especially if you have an email list under like 5,000 people or the most other end of the extreme, the most kind of like worst case scenario is people just straight up say, I’m just not selling. Like I don’t have anything to sell. Um, or they do have something to sell, but no one knows about it. They’re not posting about it on social media.
They’re not emailing your list about it. They don’t have any funnel setup that tell people about it. They’re not sharing the testimonials. They don’t have any ads running. It’s like, know what people- everyone who follows, you should know how to buy from you pretty quickly. My, what I teach in my sales program and my side hustle program is it sell every day. And it doesn’t mean you need to be obnoxiously selling every day, but open up a stream of abundance and income into your life every day. Um, and so a good way to just ask yourself is go look at the past week, how many times in your social media posts have you directly said what you are selling? How many times in the last week have you emailed your list for them to buy from you? Have you even emailed your list at all?
And none of this is meant to spark judgment, shame, anything like that. It’s just to bring awareness. You know, we can’t fix what we don’t know is broken. So ask yourself, when is the last time I sold? Am I doing it frequently? If I want to be making $5,000 a month, am I giving people the opportunity to buy more than $5,000 worth of things every single month? You know, every business will hear more no’s than yeses, every single business. I’m going to say it again. Every business will hear more no’s than they do yes’s. So you need to be giving people an abundance of opportunity to say yes to you and not even have time for the no’s.
So, that is the third trait of my most successful side hustlers is they sell and they sell things that are in alignment with their goals. If they want to make $10,000 in a month, you better believe they are selling frequently. They are getting on discovery calls and they are selling higher ticket things. They are not counting on a $20 ebook or a $97 course, or even a $300 course to get them to $10,000. They are thinking big picture, big ticket, and they are opening up the revenue streams to come to them every single day.
All right. So those are the three traits that I see about the most successful side hustles. I see. Now let’s talk a little bit about the side hustler themselves. And some of the things that I think will really help them grow faster, versus some of the things that can keep them stuck.
So the fourth trait, the first of the side hustler piece, is that my most successful side hustlers are coachable. So though they might sometimes want to slap me through the computer screen. They don’t, they listen, they receive, they do not react. They can respond, you know, and we can talk through things, but they don’t react. How do I know if someone is coachable? What does it mean to be coachable? Well, first of all, a large part of what I do with my clients, especially my higher ticket clients is I really help them find the answers within themselves, which means that I ask them a lot of questions. I don’t usually like to have them come to me, ask me how they want to see something happen in their business and expect me to just kind of map it out, because that is me telling them how to do something. And you’re doing this to build a business on your terms.
So I usually go back and say, okay, well, you could do it this way. How would this feel? What do you think about this? What would it look like if we did it this way, what would that outcome feel like for you? And really help them feel into the optimal path for them. Now, I know that they’re coachable. If they are receptive to these questions, if they’re open to them and if they continue exploring them and coming to their own solutions with them. And then if I need to say, you know, you might think- basically, if I need to be honest with them or blunt with them about an idea that they have, that I don’t think is going to work or an idea that they have, that I don’t think they’re going to follow through on because I’ve seen them abandoned a few other times.
I can tell that they’ll listen to me. If they listen and respond versus listen and react. And I will say, what are you hearing me say? And if they can kind of come back and say, well, you’re saying that in this situation, X, Y, and Z could happen. That shows me that they’re more coachable than if they come back and say, well, you’re saying I’m doing X, Y, and Z wrong because I’m not, it’s not, I’m not, I’m here to help. I’m here to make them the best they can be. And so it’s kind of about taking that personal element out of it, which I’ve also had to get better at. I have to say, when I started out, I was a lot more nervous about hurting people’s feelings and I wanted my clients to like me, but my clients aren’t paying me to be their friends.
They’re paying me to get them the results. And so I have to do whatever that takes and they have to do whatever that takes to it’s a true partnership. So you have to be willing to learn and change and grow. And the tough part about this is, is that when you are stepping into a new journey like this, when you are stepping into entrepreneurship, you oftentimes will have to gave up things that you are really attached to. I’ve seen this mean giving up certain people in your life, ways of thinking, sometimes even spiritual attachments or religious attachments or values that their parents had, which can make them feel separated from their parents. I’ve had to do some of that. It can feel very painful, but a lot of the times that stuff is all in our head because these values that we have been passed down to, you know, what a gift and privilege it is for us as humans to be able to live by our own set of values.
And we all have that ability yet so few of us do, because we’re afraid to question the values we taught when we were kids. We were taught when we were kids, whether that was from our parents, from our churches, from our teachers, from anyone else that we really looked up to. Um, and when you’re young and impressionable like that, it can feel very dangerous to, um, steer off the path. And we keep that fear with us into adulthood, because we’re never really taught how to question those values. It’s always seen as like a judgment of the person we’re questioning. And it’s, it’s just not, um, you might still end up loving the values that your parents or your church or your, uh, teachers had, but you get to make that choice and that doesn’t come without the ability and the willingness to potentially have to change things about how you think and how you live.
Okay. The fifth trait I see in my most successful side hustlers is that they think like a leader from day one. So most of the time in the early side hustle days, you are the, you are a solopreneur, you are doing it all, you are running it all, you are doing everything. I did this for a long time. And so it can almost feel like you’ll learn to be a leader when you have a team or when you hire more people or when you have a bigger platform or whatever the case may be. And in some sense, in some ways you do have a sense of freedom earlier on when it is kind of just you, you can be more nimble. Um, you can make changes quicker. You can kind of just respond in whatever way you want to. And there is something lovely about that. But thinking as a leader from the beginning makes a huge difference in the longevity and the success of your side hustle. And here’s what I mean, you are not your business. And when people start thinking that they are the only result of their business, it’s a very slippery slope, because then all of a sudden your business success is pretty much a line on how you feel about yourself that day. So if you’re tired and you’re susceptible to feeling down lazy, you need to rest. It’s very easy to fall into this trap of thinking that your business is going down.
If you are stressed about money, and you think that because your personal finances are maybe not where you want them to be, and it’s the responsible thing to do to save money. You might pause on investing in your business, which will stump the growth of your business. You have to think of the two separately. And that is just the first kind of component of being a leader. That way, when you do start hiring a team and you do start building out more sophisticated systems, your business is bigger than you. It functions on its own and you make money, whether you’re in a good mood or not, which is how it should be. We shouldn’t just be relying on like the days that we’re motivated for our income. It’s a very slippery slope.
So thinking from day one, like a leader means thinking what is in the best interest of the business and if that causes me stress, how can I use my mindset? So that I recognize that the stress I have personally, should not have anything to do with my business and whatever strains my business are going through, they have nothing to do with me. They, and it’s not that they have nothing to do with you in the sense that like you totally, you know, we’ll separate like that. You’ll totally divorce yourself of the two. It’s not that simple, but the point is you yourself work, can’t be dictated by your business and the same, it’s the same, the other way around. So you can’t make business financial decisions and what your business needs to grow based on how you feel about money that day. You can’t decide not to work for a little while because you are feeling tired. You can’t stop yourself from being visible in your business from growing because you’re feeling shy. You know what I mean? Like you have to think about what the business needs, and think like a leader. Right.
Okay. The final trait I see in my most successful side hustlers is that they are in entrepreneurial communities. I cannot tell you it’s like night and day. When I see someone go from trying to do this on their own crying to their partner or their husband, when they feel like things aren’t going the way that they want it to feeling like they are failing on social media, whatever the case may be versus when they get into my side hustle program and they’re in a community and it’s like their whole eyes open up, their whole world changes because all of a sudden they have a group of people that they can text about what they’re learning, their wins, what they’re implementing, how can they get on for a virtual happy hour to talk about a new side hustle idea, they move 10 times as fast when they’re in this community.
And this community never goes away. I know for me, once I started getting into an entrepreneurial community, through my own masterminds, through my own group programs, all that kind of stuff. It’s non negotiable for me anymore. And I know it can be easy to think, well, if you have supportive friends or family, or if you’re self-disciplined, do you really need all of these things? And the answer is absolutely yes. I had very supportive friends and a very supportive boyfriend and very supportive parents, but they were one, not my ideal client. And so that’s a big mistake I see people make is they will ask people in their life what they think about their business decisions when the people in their life would never buy from them anyway, because they’re not their ideal clients. So it makes absolutely no sense or they sort of just assume that because they have a good support system, therefore, uh, they are supported and, you know, it’s two completely different things.
It’s sort of like, you wouldn’t think, Oh, well I have a really good workout instructor and I have a really good doctor. And so, you know, I have a lot of support with my health. Therefore, I don’t need therapy, not necessarily, like no, it’s mental health, it’s completely different. You really have to think about what is supporting you at which part of your life and people, no matter how bad they want to support you. If they’re not in the trenches with you, they have no idea. It’s very easy for people to give business advice and have judgements around business when they don’t have a business themselves and this isn’t making them wrong. It’s just the truth. And I’m here to tell you that my most successful side hustlers are with other side hustlers they’re with entrepreneurs, they have mentors, they have a team they’re ready to support them and help them and go into this armed and ready with them.
Okay. So to recap, I’d love for those of you guys that have been with me. Uh, let me know your favorite one here, but to recap, here are the top six traits I see in my most successful side hustlers and side hustles, uh, after having helped around a hundred people start and grow successful side hustles and leave their nine to five job. So the first would be that they have at least part of their side hustle, digital, uh, they’re not relying on anything, brick and mortar. The second is that they are visible, specifically to have an email list. The third is that they are selling in alignment with their goals. They’re not expecting for people to DM them out of the blue and hope that that means they’ll get a sale. The fourth is that they are coachable. They are not stuck in their own ways. They’re willing to learn to grow. They don’t get blaming when they feel like things aren’t going their way. They’re constantly looking for how they could see a new opportunity differently. The fifth is that they think like a leader from day one and they don’t start their businesses growth based on insecurities fears, whatever else they might be feeling in their personal life. And the sixth is that they have community.
