This might ruffle some feathers, but it’s been on my mind lately, and it has to be said.
Over the past few years, I’ve helped hundreds of clients start their side hustles. Many of them have gone on to quit their 9-5 jobs, enjoy five-figure months, and build six figure businesses.
But the truth is I’ve talked to even more aspiring entrepreneurs and side hustlers that have big dreams, big desires, and big ideas, but they don’t’ move forward.
The reasons behind this vary… whether they don’t have the money to spend on their business, they don’t have the time around their 9-5, they don’t have clarity that they want, they’re unsure if they’re ready… it goes on and on.
But honestly, the root of all of these reasons is the same: it’s fear.
It’s fear that this won’t work out, you’ll be worse off than when you started, and you will have given up a part of your secure life, thereby putting you in an insecure situation.
But now, here we are. The world’s at its knees and the economy has rarely seen anything this challenging or devastating. And the brutal truth is that so many people that said no to taking a risk on their own dreams and desires are in the tragic situation of losing their jobs.
In other words, they let their dreams go in the name of security, and now, the security is lost too.
It’s honestly one of the things that’s making me the saddest about this entire situation.
My point here is not that everyone should be an entrepreneur or that entrepreneurship is the solution to this economic hardship. If you have zero desire to start a business and are going through career/financial struggles right now, I am so, so sorry. My heart goes out to you.
My point is that fear is never going to pay off as a basis for your decisions. Because fear-based securities are only illusions. Fear-based reasons (lack of money, judgement from others, fear of failure, not being good enough) are not grounded in truth.
This huge change and collective pause is an opportunity for us all to find more of our truths. For us to step into their invitation and use this time at home to explore the parts we may have previously been too fearful to do so.
We have a choice right now: how do we want to be different when we come out of this? Will we stay the same? Or, will we decide that this will be a “before vs. after” part of your life, and you’ll take actions right now that could forever change the course of your life- for the better?
