If you ask me, Diane Von Furstenberg is one of the most inspirational people on the planet. Known for her iconic dress, she built a fashion empire and has inspired and empowered women her entire life.
Though we immediately know what she did with her life (hello clothes!), she didn’t necessarily begin her career knowing she’d build this brand. Instead, she went into her career based not on what she’d do, but who she wanted to be. She says:
“I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I always knew the woman I wanted to be.”
Working with budding entrepreneurs and side hustlers all over the world, this is the mentality of all the most successful and profitable entrepreneurs.
It’s that grit and the pursuit of their best selves that leads them to the way they can best help others, and that brings them in the most sales.
On the other end of the spectrum, I so many aspiring entrepreneurs with tons of passion and drive catching themselves up because they’re not sure exactly what or how to execute. While I certainly understand the frustration, I’ve also seen these questions of “how” stop people from moving forward for years.
Though I didn’t state it as elegantly as Queen DVF, I resonate with her sentiment about moving forward based not on what you’ll do, but who you want to be.
How Diane Von Furstenberg’s Advice Influenced Me
When I started my business and declined my law school acceptances, I had no idea what I’d create, who I’d help, or honestly, even that it’d become the business it is today!
What I did know, and where I led from instead, was who I wanted to be.
I wanted to be brave, and go for a less conventional career path, even if it meant taking risks.
I wanted to be creative, even though I wasn’t even sure how or if I was at that point.
I wanted to be seen in the world and share my story with others.
I wanted to be daring enough to create life on my own terms, not in a way society had pre-structured for me.
I wanted to be helpful by sharing my life experiences, not suppressing them while others could be going through something similar and needing help.
Leading with this purpose has brought me to do what I do now: work with incredible clients from all around that have a desire to create their own online businesses for two main reasons:
1- To share their own life experiences with others and make an impact in the world while doing so.
2- To create products and services based off of what they have to share and earn big money while doing so.
It’s the most fulfilling work I’ve ever done.
When I started my business, I also had no idea what I wanted to do with it, but I knew who I wanted to be.
What about you? Do you take action based on who you want to be? Do your values influence your decisions? Do you have a burning desire to be bold, brave, impactful, helpful, profitable… anything else?
Those desires are yours for the taking. Trust them, they are leading you right where you need to be, even if you can’t see that destination quite yet.
